BOISE, Idaho — A veteran FBI agent who helped arrest mountain man Claude Dallas and was involved in a deadly 1984 siege involving white supremacists on Whidbey Island is going to prison for 12 months after pleading guilty to possession of child pornography.
William Buie, 64, of Boise, was sentenced yesterday in U.S. District Court to a year in prison on one count of possession of sexually exploitative materials involving minors. He had pleaded guilty in March.
Buie told agents with the Utah Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force that he learned to access child-pornography Web sites while attending a seminar on preventing child exploitation as part of his law-enforcement training in 2000 or 2001. He acknowledged using his bank debit card to gain access to child-erotica and child-pornography Web sites, including using the card to buy a month of access to a child pornography Internet site titled "Eternal Nymphets."
Buie, an FBI sniper who received weapons training at Quantico, Va., participated in the arrest of Dallas in 1982 in Paradise Valley, Nev., after the self-proclaimed mountain man had spent a year on the run after killing two Idaho Fish and Game agents.
He also took part in the 1984 siege on Whidbey Island in which Robert Mathews, leader of the violent racist cell called "The Order," was killed after an 18-month wave of armed robberies and assassinations.
In a statement, the Justice Department said that as many as 150 sexually explicit images depicting children were found on Buie's home computers. It said no images were found on Buie's FBI computer.
He subsequently left the agency.
For celebrities, public opinion, not a jury, determines one's fate
Steven Winn, Chronicle Arts and Culture Critic

Not guilty in a court of law doesn't necessarily mean not guilty in the court of public opinion, at least if history is any judge. Through the years, celebrities have found themselves embroiled in scandal. For some, regardless of the outcome of their trials, their careers would never recover. Others, however, found a forgiving public.
Monday's verdict in the Michael Jackson case is sure to leave armchair lawyers and Neverland stargazers avidly debating and analyzing for weeks to come. But regardless of the actual verdicts, Jackson's fate as a celebrity defendant was assured before the trial began. With his career in seemingly permanent eclipse, the pop star can most likely count on being remembered as much for his life in court and in the court of public opinion as for what he accomplished onstage, onscreen and in recording studios.
Jackson joins a roster of stars similarly enshrined in the sexually tinted celebrity Hall of Shame. Some, like O.J. Simpson, are unlikely to emerge. Others may undergo some form of rehabilitation, public change of heart or indifference to their actual or alleged misdeeds. Here are some prominent cases the Jackson trial invokes:
Swashbuckling film star Errol Flynn was charged with statutory rape in 1942 for having sex with two teenage girls on his yacht. A jury acquitted him, giving rise to the phrase "in like Flynn." Flynn returned to acting and enjoyed a box-office surge. But heavy drinking eroded his skills. In his final film, "Cuban Rebel Girls" in 1959, he shared the screen with his 17-year-old girlfriend, Beverly Aadland. He died at 50.
R&B star R. Kelly ("Born Into the '90s," "12 Play") made headlines in 2002 when a widely seen videotape allegedly showed him having sex with a 14- year-old girl. Kelly was arrested and hit with several counts of child pornography but eluded statutory rape charges when the girl declined to press charges. Some of the child pornography charges were dropped after a judged ruled that photographs had been seized illegally; other charges are pending. Four years earlier, in 1998, he settled a civil suit involving sex with another underage girl. Kelly's songwriting and recording career flourishes. His last double CD, "Happy People/U Saved Me," has sold nearly 1 million copies, and his tour with Jay-Z grossed $14 million before it crashed and burned amid feuding between the two stars.
Film director Roman Polanski ("Chinatown," "Rosemary's Baby," "Repulsion") fled the United States in 1977, after a six-count indictment for his involvement with a 13-year-old girl. The charges included unlawful sexual intercourse, rape by use of drugs and sodomy; the incidents occurred at Jack Nicholson's house. Polanski accepted a plea bargain and underwent 42 days of psychiatric evaluation. Before sentencing, he bolted for Europe, where he continues to direct films ("The Pianist," "Death and the Maiden"). In an earlier brush with criminal notoriety, Polanski was married to Sharon Tate, a victim in the 1969 Charles Manson murders.
Rotund silent film actor Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle crashed and burned in San Francisco after he was charged with rape and manslaughter in the 1921 death of actress Virginia Rappe at the St. Francis Hotel. Two trials ended in deadlocked juries; a third delivered an acquittal. He was widely thought to have been framed. A note from the final jury offered an apology for his ordeal. But public opinion buried him, and his films were banned. Arbuckle directed under the pseudonyms William Goodrich and Will B. Good. He acted again briefly before his death at age 46 in 1933.
A paternity charge stained the career of silent film star Charlie Chaplin in 1943. Although blood tests apparently disproved actress Joan Barry's claims, Chaplin was indicted under the Mann Act for transporting the woman to New York for sexual purposes. The court rejected the so-called "white slavery" charges but ruled in Barry's favor in the paternity case. Chaplin was not permitted to re-enter the United States after traveling to London for the 1952 premiere of "Limelight." He moved to Switzerland, accepted an honorary Academy Award in 1972 and died at 88.
O.J. Simpson rewrote the book on 20th century celebrity trials with his obsessively watched 1995 acquittal in the double murder of his wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and waiter Ronald Goldman. Triply famous as a Hall of Fame football player, TV analyst and "Towering Inferno" actor-turned-Hertz rental- car pitchman, Simpson had served two years of probation on a 1989 charge of beating Nicole. A 1997 civil judgment against him, sustained in his 2001 appeal, awarded $33.5 million to the families of the victims, almost none of which they have collected. Simpson lives and golfs in Florida on a $25,000-a- month income that is protected from court judgments.
Pee-wee Herman, a.k.a. Paul Reubens, was the creator and a star of the 1985 hit film "Pee-wee's Big Adventure" and "Pee-wee's Playhouse," a Saturday morning live-action and cartoon TV program that appealed to both children and adults. His career skidded to a halt in 1991 when he was caught masturbating at a pornographic movie theater in Sarasota, Fla. He pleaded no contest to an indecent-exposure charge, was fined $75 and sentenced to community service. His show was pulled off the air. After a modest recovery ("Batman Returns," "Buffy the Vampire Slayer"), Reubens was charged with possessing child pornography in 2002. The splashy arrest resulted in a single misdemeanor charge for material Herman described as "vintage erotica."
Stand-up comedian Paula Poundstone was charged with child endangerment and committing lewd acts with a female child younger than 14 in 2001. She pleaded no contest on the child endangerment charges, on the condition that the sex charges be dropped. Poundstone temporarily lost custody of her three adopted children, was ordered to enter an alcohol rehab program for six months and sentenced to five years' probation. Her children were returned to her after 17 months of foster care, and she resumed her comedy career.
Marv Albert became the butt of late-night TV jokes in 1997 when girlfriend Vanessa Perhach pressed assault and battery charges against the NBC sportscaster. Testimony by the plaintiff and another woman documented Albert's tastes for biting, forcible sex, threesomes and dressing in panties and garter belts. Albert received a 12-month suspended sentence and returned to broadcasting.
In 1995, actor Hugh Grant was nabbed in the act with prostitute Divine Brown in Hollywood. The two were found in his parked car. Grant was fined $1, 180 and sentenced to two years' probation. With his new movie, "Nine Months," due for release, Grant made a series of breast-baring public apologies -- to his family, fans and girlfriend Elizabeth Hurley -- on "The Tonight Show" and elsewhere. Grant's sheepish charm worked. Some of his most popular and praised films, including "Notting Hill," "Bridget Jones's Diary," "About a Boy" and "Love Actually" followed the scandal.

Five Hundred High School Seniors Nationwide To Receive Support
MONTVALE, N.J., June 14 -- Mercedes-Benz USA (MBUSA) will award $1 million in scholarship funding to 500 college-bound students who are the first in their families to attend college. These high school seniors are all recipients of the DRIVE YOUR FUTURE: The Mercedes-Benz USA Scholarship Program, which grants $2,000, one-time scholarships to help students offset tuition and school expenses. Nearly 2,000 high school seniors nationwide applied for the scholarships this year. Five hundred students, representing each state, were selected based on financial need and exceptional achievement in the areas of academic performance, leadership and school and community activities.
"It is extremely rewarding to have the opportunity to assist so many students across the country -- students who have demonstrated significant achievements despite financial hardship or personal obstacles," said Paul Halata, president and CEO of Mercedes-Benz USA. "DRIVE YOUR FUTURE celebrates the accomplishments of these dedicated young people who will go on to shape our world through new inventions, the arts, technology, business and maybe even the automotive world. The principles of success - hard work, determination and a commitment to excellence - have served Mercedes-Benz well for over one hundred years and we hope to inspire the same ideals in our youth today."
"I feel very fortunate to be the first in my family to go to college and believe that this scholarship will help give me the opportunities I need to succeed in life," said Carolina Lopez of the Bronx, New York. "With the Mercedes-Benz scholarship, I hope to reduce my loans which will be of great help to my mother."
Now in its second year, the DRIVE YOUR FUTURE program was developed to respond to a critical need for scholarships to help students offset the costs of postsecondary education. DRIVE YOUR FUTURE was created in collaboration with Scholarship America and is part of MBUSA's broader philanthropic initiative aimed at educating and empowering future generations by helping young people reach their full potential and become the leaders of their generation. Through support from MBUSA and the fundraising activities of Mercedes-Benz dealers nationwide, DRIVE YOUR FUTURE scholarship awards have doubled for 2005.
"For these first generation college-bound students, particularly those from underserved communities, the availability of financial assistance for their first year of college may be a deciding factor in whether or not to continue their education," said Marilyn Rundell, vice president of Scholarship America. "Scholarships, such as the ones being awarded by Mercedes-Benz USA, help ease the financial burden placed on aspiring collegians and put a postsecondary degree closer within their reach."
A number of graduating high school seniors from each state will receive scholarships in addition to students from various youth organizations such as Automotive High School, Big Brothers Big Sisters, FIRST Robotics, Girls Inc., Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation, Teach for America, Virtual Enterprises and The Young Women's Leadership School. DRIVE YOUR FUTURE award recipients will serve as ambassadors of Mercedes-Benz USA Philanthropy by getting involved in volunteer activities in their communities such as mentoring and tutoring younger students.
"My parents never got the opportunity to go to college and I always knew that the economic factor would be a problem for me, so I am thankful to be receiving this help from Mercedes-Benz," said Mary Sanchez of New York, N.Y. "I plan to major in International Relations which will help me learn about the needs of others and help them just like Mercedes-Benz has helped me."
DRIVE YOUR FUTURE: The Mercedes-Benz USA Scholarship Program is an initiative of MBUSA's philanthropic program which is aimed at educating and empowering future generations. Committed to the communities in which employees live and work, MBUSA has also built alliances with a number of youth organizations across the country. The company supports many of these efforts through employee volunteer activities. Philanthropic initiatives are reviewed and implemented through MBUSA corporate headquarters in Montvale, N.J. and through its six regional offices around the country.
