The past week, when it came to Internet searches, Danica Patrick was more popular than Deep Throat. She sped past web darlings Pamela Anderson, Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan. She also lapped Star Wars 3 and ``diets.''

Added I found a cute picture of Danica Patrick. I think it is from a 2003 magaxzine shoot for FHM (?). Maybe it was Maxim? Anyway thank these folks for her picture > www.fastdates.com They sure have some colorful bike racing photos.

What does Bolly mean?" asks actor Dev Anand. "It's the weirdest and the most contemptuous expression to describe our film industry. At a time, when our film industry is producing some great films, to call it 'Bollywood' is shameful. Even the government refers to us as, Bollywood."

Even Amitabh Bachchan has a major aversion to the word Bollywood, because he thinks "it is derogatory for the Hindi film industry to be unfavourably compared to Hollywood -- from where the word is derived". And he finds an echo amongst his fraternity. "Are we aping the West and becoming Hollywoodised?" asks actor Rahul Dev. "Why can't we be known as the Indian film industry or just by any other name?"

But is this the tag of destiny? "I think it's too late to change our name. The industry has been labelled as Bollywood," says actress Mahima Chaudhry. "Bollywood is cute and kistch. I don't think Pamela Anderson (the actress admitted she had never heard the term at an award nite in Toronto) has any general awareness. Does she read the newspapers? Whenever I travel, people say: 'Oh, she's a Bollywood actress!'"

Would renaming Bollywood give it a new identity? "I don't think so," says actress Udita Goswami. "We're recognised as Bollywood by the world. In fact, we represent a different culture -- that of different emotions.?" And then, what's in a name? "Would a rose by any other name smell just as sweet," asks producer Akbar Khan. "How does it matter if one calls us Bollywood. " The last word: "Just call us Indian Motion Pictures. Let's have a new identity," says filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar.

LOS ANGELES, June 9 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The Free Speech Coalition announced today that it will launch a political action center at the "Erotica LA" adult entertainment expo, so that patrons can urge Congress to fix the USA PATRIOT Act and restore privacy rights. Adult video stars and local exotic dancers, together with patrons of the convention, will call on lawmakers to reject the administration's push to expand the controversial law, and instead to bring it back in line with the Constitution.

"The adult entertainment industry is particularly concerned with the USA PATRIOT Act because it gives government the power to invade people's privacy without first having to suspect them of any wrongdoing," said Kat Sunlove, legislative affairs director of the Free Speech Coalition. "If you are a law abiding American, then the videos your rent, the magazines you buy, and the clubs you choose to frequent are your own business, not the government's."

At the action center, adult entertainers as well as patrons of the trade show will learn about how the Patriot Act infringes on the privacy of all Americans, and how a bi-partisan bill called the SAFE Act will help to restore basic privacy safeguards. They will then be able to fax and email their Congressional representatives from the convention floor.

The opening of the action center on Friday, June 10, comes right as the administration is pushing Congress to expand the Patriot Act. "Today we are joining with Americans across the country in calling for common sense fixes to the Patriot Act", said Sunlove. "It went too far, too fast and it now needs to be fixed, not expanded. We can give law enforcement the tools they need to protect us without trampling on the privacy protections enshrined in our Constitution."

"Erotica LA" will take place at the Los Angeles Convention Center, June 10 - 12. The FSC Action Center will be located at booth No. 118. Among the celebrities expected to work at the Action Center during the show are Nina Hartley, Brittany Andrews, Kaylani Lei, Alexandra Silk, Anita Cannibal and many local dancers from gentlemen's clubs around Los Angeles.

Mexican fever to hit London with rare Frida Kahlo exhibition

Thu Jun 9, 1:22 PM ET

LONDON (AFP) - A rare retrospective of the striking, at times brutal, works of Frida Kahlo opens Thursday in the Tate Modern, riding on a new wave of fame for the Mexican artist triggered by a Hollywood film of her life.

"A lot of people know her life, but very few know her works. Her work has been underexposed," said curator Emma Dexter of the first European exhibition on such a scale of Kahlo's artistry, and the first solo exhibition for Kahlo in Britain.

The widely-anticipated exhibition is expected to draw large crowds thanks in part to the success of the 2002 film "Frida" in which Kahlo (1907-1954) was played by Mexican actress Salma Hayek.

Kahlo, who contracted polio at the age of six leaving her with one leg shorter than the other, began to paint when she was confined to bed after a horrific bus accident at the age of 18.

The crash smashed her spine in three places, badly damaged her pelvis and fractured her legs. It was to scar her physically and mentally, and she was to battle against her injuries for the rest of life.

But it provided material which she drew on for her paintings, which over time also became an outlet for her anger not just at her own physical limitations but also at the injustices she saw around her.

"She has a contemporary and universal resonance," said another curator Tanya Barson.

"Her work is still relevant to these days, especially to women, because of its feminist stance, her allusions to domestic violence, politics."

While still young, Kahlo met and married Diego Rivera, a Marxist and mural painter, who was 20 years older than her and the most famous Mexican artist of his time.

Her parents strongly disapproved of their marriage in 1929, dubbing it a "union between an elephant and a dove."

While Rivera gained increasing fame, Kahlo stayed in the shadows often painting self-portraits in which she portrayed herself with her trademark dark eyebrows, meeting in the middle, and a shadow of a moustache.

Many of the portraits are erotic and lush with Mexican references. Rivera is also in the centre of many of her works, despite his many infidelities including with her sister.

They divorced in 1939, after Kahlo also had a shortlived affair with Leon Trotsky who briefly sought refuge in her family home during his ill-fated exile in Mexico.

After her divorce, she poured her pain out onto the canvas with her works becoming at times almost surrealist. They were to remarry a year later, as Kahlo's health began failing due to lingering damage caused by the accident. She was to die several years later.

Out of the 150 paintings attributed to Kahlo, the Tate Modern has assembled some 87 works including 62 oil paintings.

The exhibition is also accompanied by documentaries and films which were made about the actress as well as works of Mexican cinema.

It shows the contribution made by Kahlo to Mexico's cultural rebirth and the country's search for its roots after the 1910-1920 revolution, while other paintings are openly critical of the United States.

Greatly impressed by Aztec art, there are also paintings of Kahlo in folk costume, as well as imagery from the Catholic church which exercised a strong influence on her.

"Frida Kahlo" runs until October 9 at the Tate Modern. Entrance GBP10, free for under 12s, open Sunday to Thursday, 10.00-18.00, Friday and Saturday, 10.00-22.00. Telephone, + 44 20 7887 8008, website http://www.tate.org.uk/.

Pamela seamiest moments in music history question mark

Hey Pam's not seamy!

Blender plays up music by pressing puree

By Peter Carlson

Washington Post

Courtney Love beat Diana Ross, whipped Jack White, pummeled 50 Cent and crushed Suge Knight. Now she’s in the finals of Blender magazine’s “First-Ever Ultimate Fighting Championship.”

It’s a battle for the coveted title of “The Ultimate Rock & Roll Psycho,” and Love – lead singer of Hole, widow of Kurt Cobain and much-arrested former junkie – certainly deserves the honor. But to win, she has to face “the Killer” himself: Jerry Lee Lewis, a man who shot his bassist, stabbed a magazine editor and married his 13-year-old cousin. Lewis defeated rappers C-Murder and DMX and heavy metal lunatic G.G. Allin in the preliminary rounds, and now he’s ready for Love.

Bing! The bell rings! They go at it, punching, kicking, scratching, clawing!

Well, not really. This is a purely theoretical battle, staged only in the demented minds of the savants at Blender. It’s just another of Blender’s delightfully daffy high-concept rock stories, right up there with “The Most Awesomely Mediocre Artists of All Time,” which ran this year, much to the chagrin of folks who like Sonny Bono, Art Garfunkel and Clarence Clemons.

And the winner is ... well, if you want to find out who took the ultimate psycho title, you’ll just have to buy Blender, which is a good idea anyway because Blender is big fun.

Created in 2001 by Felix Dennis, the mad genius who brought us Maxim, Stuff and the Week, Blender is the pop-music magazine that doesn’t take pop music too seriously.

Some rock mags see pop stars as poets, sensitive artists and the voice of their generation. Blender sees pop stars as nut jobs, drunks, stoners, sex maniacs, careerists and hype-mongers who occasionally produce good music.

But Blender isn’t a muckraking or moralizing magazine. The editors revel in rock misbehavior. They seem to believe the arrests, overdoses, brawls and car crashes of your average pop star are at least as entertaining as his or her music.

And who can argue with that? Not me. I’d much rather read about the sordid “Secret History of the Backstreet Boys” than actually listen to their CDs. And Blender gives me that opportunity this month in a story touted with a classic Blender cover line: “Groupies! Coke Binges! Stinky Socks!”

Blender brings its readers news they just can’t get anyplace else. When Rob Thomas, lead singer of matchbox twenty, announces that his dog was “sexually abused by his previous owner,” Blender lets us know. When Britney Spears visits an “energy healer” in a Malibu strip mall, Blender prints a picture of the healer waving his hands over her pretty, empty head.

And when a sex video featuring Fred Durst, the potbellied lead singer of Limp Bizkit, appears on the Internet, Blender not only quotes a porn expert who gives it an erotic rating – “zero” – it also conducts a survey asking readers whose sex video they’d least like to see. (The winner: rapper Fat Joe.)

But Blender doesn’t just report these items, it gives them perspective, pointing out where they fit into the long and glorious history of rock knuckleheadedness.

Any mag can report that some rocker got stoned and crashed his car. Blender gave us three pages of “Rock’s Worst Drivers,” a group that includes Billy Joel, Keith Richards (“the walking – and, too often, driving – chemistry set”) and, of course, Elvis, who shot his 1971 Ford Pantera with a .22-caliber revolver when it failed to start.

Any mag can report that X rocker is dating Y actress, but Blender gave us eight profusely illustrated pages on “The 25 Hottest Rock & Roll Galpals,” including Christie Brinkley, Carmen Electra, Drew Barrymore and Cameron Diaz, whom Blender identifies as “The Farrah Fawcett for the Teeth-Whitener Generation.”

And who can forget “The A-Z of Rock & Roll Sex Scandals,” which appeared in May? A timeless classic, it featured “the seamiest moments in music history,” in alphabetical order from Anderson, Pamela to Zeppelin, Led.

It’s this long-view historical perspective that lifts Blender above other rock mags, and it may explain why Blender edged past Spin in circulation earlier this year – up to about 600,000 – and now is second only to Rolling Stone, which sells 1.2 million copies an issue.

Blender’s sense of history is also apparent in its CD reviews, which are voluminous, pungent and readable. In the April issue, Blender reviewed the Mars Volta’s CD “Frances the Mute” and found it hard-rocking but pretentious: “There is an entire minute of bird chirping at the beginning of the suite called ‘Miranda, That Ghost Just Isn’t Holy Anymore,’ followed by nearly three minutes of mystery noise and Cedric-wail ...”

That sounds pretty pretentious, doesn’t it? But it’s not pretentious enough to earn a spot in the sidebar piece – “The 4 Most Pretentious Albums of All Time,” which includes Lou Reed’s “Metal Machine Music” and Sting’s “The Soul Cages,” which Blender describes as a “gelatinous concept album about the son of a dying riveter who sails to the Island of Souls so he can save his father by drinking Death under the table.”

Whether it’s shooting spitballs at rock pretentiousness or wallowing in rock raunch, Blender is the rock ’n’ roll mag with the rock ’n’ roll spirit.

Harrumph!

The 9th Annual Erotica Los Angeles Continues to Expand and Reports Record Attendance Numbers!
Saturday June 11, 10:22 pm ET
At the LA Convention Center Through June 12, 2005

LOS ANGELES, CA--(MARKET WIRE)--Jun 11, 2005 -- Attendees enjoyed the first day of the fun-filled, educational and visually stunning entertainment convention, the 9th Annual Erotica LA (ELA) taking place in Los Angeles through June 12. A new format brought an influx of attendees, and preliminary numbers show that attendance is up by 15% over 2004 with an estimation of nearly 40,000 attendees. Famous for introducing sexy new products and concepts into the mainstream each year, ELA 2005 is THE place to be this weekend!

This year, ELA 2005 has taken over more than 250,000 square feet and is featuring more than 275 vendors, which is up over 65%. This expanded show features three interconnected marketplaces defined by genre or product.

"Our convention has grown significantly and the consumers have followed along with the trend," stated Chad Beecher, Vice President of Operations & Marketing, Erotica LA. "This year, we really stepped up by separating the marketplaces into three genres: Romantic, X and Gay -- and it has proved to entice even more consumers to check it out. Once again, we have reached our goal to expose even more people to our fun, educational and entertaining convention."

Exhibitors are also pleased with the show's new format, which has contributed to the amazing turnout. Their sales have increased significantly, and many exhibitors are planning ahead to next year.

"We are thrilled at the response we have gotten from show attendees," said Dana Myers, Creator and President of Booty Parlor, a brand-new sexy lifestyle & accessories novelty company that targets women and the "romantic" side of pleasure. "By designing a booth shaped like a make-up counter, women were quite comfortable and willing to find out more about our company and special "toys." This face-to-face interaction was the perfect way to introduce our new products and catalog of fun flirty things for women."

ELA 2005 is also hosting more stage shows than ever before at two separate venues -- one in the Romantic Marketplace and another in the X Marketplace. The Romantic Marketplace featured lingerie and sexy attire fashion shows, while the X Marketplace contains racier shows including fashion, exotic dancer revues and more. The Romantic Marketplace stage also features many fun shows including a Naughty School Girl Dance Performance, a Love, Latex and Leather Fashion Show, a Hollywood Men All Male Dance Review, The Dominatrix and her Muses Dance Performance, and a La Bare All Male Dance Revue. The X Marketplace will also hold a Hip Hop Showcase, a Musotica Fashion Show, a Semi Final Exotic Dancer Showdown, an Amateur Exotic Dancer Showcase and a Spice Fashion Show.

The convention has also launched an expanded educational program, doubling what was offered in 2004 and providing more topics, sessions and workshops to cover the broad spectrum of consumer interest. Seminars include "A Practical Guide to Striptease," "Activate Your Pleasure Center," "Passion 101: Keeping it Alive in your Relationship," "The Power of Seduction," "Understanding Sex Addiction," "Tantric Journey: Awaken Your G-Spot," "Safe Sex Tips 2005 with Dr. Mitch" and "The Art of Sensual Touch."

Fans can also meet the beautiful actress and owner of the Club Jenna empire, Jenna Jameson, as well the sexy girls from Wicked Pictures -- including jessica drake, Stormy and the newest Wicked girl, Keri Sable. The show also features some of the hottest exhibitors around including Spice Studios, Playboy Radio, Skin Industries, Romantix, Lifestyles, Red Light District and Real Doll. The show also boasts a satellite museum exhibit and a sampling of artwork from The Erotic Museum in Hollywood.

Erotica LA, now in its 9th consecutive year, and growing substantially each year, is world-renowned for introducing new products, services and concepts in the world of romantic, sensual and erotic entertainment. Over the past decade, sensuous entertainment has become more accessible to the public and the headlining industry has become the consistent subject of mainstream network and cable shows. Erotica LA is one of the first conventions to take this mainstream entertainment directly to the consumer. Erotica LA brings together merchants, exhibitors, talent, educators and consumers alike in the most newsworthy and entertaining event of the year!

Invent-Tech Explores the Fashion Industry - Is it in Style if it Serves a Purpose?

Now there is a new hat that provides users with compartments to place personal items safely and securely so they do not get lost.

(PRWEB) June 12, 2005 -- When clothing designers such as Christian Dior, Betsy Johnson, and Jean Paul Gautier, embark on a new creation, is it just color theory, fabric texture and perhaps a plunging neckline they are thinking about? Do you think they ever wondered if their clothing lines could serve a practical purpose instead of just a fabulous fashion statement? Clients working with Florida based invention marketing and promotions company, Invent-Tech, have taken their "Fashion Forward" concepts to a whole new level. Practicality and purpose seem to make for a new type of trend setting apparel and Invent-Tech is helping to lead the way down the catwalk of new ideas.

When individuals wear clothing without pockets it can be difficult for them to carry items such as money, identification, or their keys. Most people stick these items in their shoe or their sock, which can make walking very uncomfortable, and the items, could easily fall out and accidentally be lost. Now there is a new hat that provides users with compartments to place personal items safely and securely so they do not get lost. Inventor Mark T. of Canfield, Ohio began developing the idea for the Pocket Hat in January of 2001. He was jogging and he had no place to put his money or his I. D. when the idea came to him. If you’re a busy person, then convenience is always at a premium. For instance, if you go to work and plan on going out afterwards, it’s probably necessary to bring a change of clothes. Treshetta S., from Fresno, Texas wanted to make choosing her footwear as simple as possible. She was going to a sporting event and didn’t want to bring a separate pair of shoes for afterwards. That’s why she created the Interchangeable Heel. This valuable new product eliminates having to carry multiple pairs of shoes. The Interchangeable Heel allows the user to have two different styles of shoe, making it perfect for almost any occasion. It’s easy to use and comes in different sizes, colors and styles. The Interchangeable Heel is a great addition to any woman’s shoe collection.

Symmetry means being the same, or even on each side. Most humans, however, have one body part bigger than the matching pair. This is even more inherent in women who have endured mastectomies. A new invention called the Mix n' Match Bra has been specially created to bring comfort to women with asymmetrical breasts. Its unique design offers adjustable features that grant convenience to women worldwide. The Mix n' Match Bra is available in a variety of colors and sizes, and is affordably priced.

Jan K., who resides in Holualoa, Hawaii, is the inventor of the Mix n' Match Bra. A colleague, who had endured a mastectomy, confided in her the difficulties encountered while attempting to find a brassiere that would accommodate her figure. After the two joked about how someone needed to invent a bra for such individuals, Mrs. K. decided that she would be the one to bring a sense of security to these women.

It was three years ago, while sitting on the beach in California, that Claudia H. felt the need for some type of apparel that would support her stomach. Along with her husband, Mark H., she created the perfect solution for this problem. They call their invention the Girdle Thong. The Girdle Thong supports the stomach for women who want to wear a thong. Proprietary features help to eliminate a common problem, offering peace of mind to anyone who is self-conscious. Women can now wear sexy underwear without worrying about their appearance. The Girdle Thong is designed to be comfortable, pleasing to the eye, and with its affordable price, it is guaranteed to appeal to a wide market of consumers.

Many people like to express their personality through the clothes that they wear. It allows them to stand out or fit in, be part of the crowd or an individual. No matter what someone’s preference, though, it’s important to look good. Jason F., from Las Vegas, Nevada created something that anyone can wear, and he calls it “Fine Design’s”.This great new product provides users with accessories that allow them to express themselves in a very fashionable way. “Fine Design’s” come in different patterns, and whether wearers like hip hop, rock or sports, they will be able to find something that suits them. They’re affordable and convenient, making them great for a growing market of consumers worldwide.

These original ideas are now being made available for licensing by Invent-Tech to manufacturers interested in new product development, in many different and diverse industries. These Inventors are hoping to have their products and ideas in full production and available to the public within the very near future.

Additional information about these inventions can be obtained by contacting the Publicity/Press Department of Invent Tech. at (800) 940-9020 ext 2285 or at e-mail protected from spam bots. Invent-Tech, Inc. is a Coral Gables, Florida based company that is handling the publicity and public relations for all of these items. Check us out at http://www.invent-tech.com

Armed with film: Commando lives of the paparazzi
New book takes close look at the 'pap' phenomenon

Gina Piccalo, Los Angeles Times

Sunday, June 12, 2005

Hollywood -- They know Cameron Diaz uses obscene gestures, an open umbrella or a circuitous route to ruffle them. They're wary of Brad Pitt because they know he may lob a hamburger if they get too close. They know Ben Affleck isn't afraid of a high-speed chase and Charlize Theron won't hesitate to fight back when she's in a foul mood. They know that Nicole Kidman is sometimes listed in hotel logs as "Ruby Slipper" and Jude Law as "Mr. Blue." They know Tom Cruise stays hidden unless he's promoting a new movie. And after one of their own crashed his car into Lindsay Lohan's Mercedes last week, they know to handle her with kid gloves for awhile.

They are the paparazzi, the almost universally despised satellites of the celebrity world whose mission is to capture those rare, unguarded moments that bring the fantasy so achingly close, dissolving the manufactured image and feeding our addictive appetite for voyeurism.

Don't confuse these photographers with the well-groomed gents and ladies who populate the red carpet; by comparison, the paparazzi are commandos. They memorize license plates and celebrity pseudonyms. They pay relatives, personal trainers, valets and airline industry staff for tips. They hire helicopters, yachts, motorcyclists, even submarines to get their shot. Earlier this year, Kidman claimed two paparazzi bugged her Sydney estate.

Their savvy and chutzpah often help confirm the gossip that sells the magazines, boosts ratings and fuels the public's obsession with celebrity. Whether it's Jennifer Garner's pregnancy, Lohan's weight loss or Nick Lachey's whereabouts, a paparazzi's well-paid sources often guarantee him the unvarnished truth, the story behind the hype.

"They almost work as plainclothes cops or spies," said Peter Howe, whose new book, "Paparazzi," takes a thorough look at the "pap" phenomenon. "They're sort of like photography's unwanted relatives. And yet ... when the market for photojournalism is dwindling rapidly, these guys can't produce enough work."

When everything's off the record, as it generally is in Hollywood's image- conscious community, it's the picture that sells the story. While representatives of Pitt and Jennifer Aniston talked about their amicable split and enduring love, those pap images of Pitt, Angelina Jolie and her son Maddox frolicking on a Kenya beach told another tale entirely -- and sold for about half a million dollars.

"They're doing our version of investigative journalism," said Peter Grossman, Us Weekly's news photo editor.

For his book, Howe spent two years researching the paparazzo phenomenon and interviewing some of the industry's most successful veterans -- Phil Ramey, Ron Galella and Frank Griffin among them -- to understand this driven group. In the process, he learned that independent paparazzi can earn $1 million a year because of their unparalleled tenacity and, many would say, untethered moral code.

Some, particularly the younger photographers, are movie fans who get a thrill from being a part of the machine. Others see nothing but dollar signs. Some say celebrities deserve no privacy; it's the price of fame. Others grapple with their role and even pity the stars. Some are fine dinner companions. Others, he says, are "borderline psychotic." All of them, writes Howe, a former picture editor for the New York Times Magazine and former director of photography for Life magazine, are "blissfully unconcerned with the opinions of others."

"What I most wanted to do was finally understand why we're obsessed with celebrity. Where do these guys fit into the overall picture?" Howe said at a recent interview in Santa Monica. "What is the difference between (renowned street photographer Henri) Cartier-Bresson and a paparazzo who does exactly the same thing except with a specific group of people?"

As it turns out, the differences are quite stark. For example, it's unlikely Cartier-Bresson ever dressed as a llama to blend into a herd grazing near his subject as the National Enquirer's photographers did to capture Michael J. Fox's wedding.

At the same time, though, the paparazzi possess unwavering devotion to their craft, Howe says. Of course they're driven by the lottery-like payoffs a single image can produce, even if it's out of focus and shot from a mile away. But earning their income means enduring almost unceasing vitriol from their subjects and going to extraordinary lengths to get their shots.

"The biggest thing to overcome is when someone turns around and says, 'Get a life,' " said Griffin, a partner with Randy Bauer in L.A.-based Bauer- Griffin, one of the most prominent American paparazzo agencies.

L.A.-based master paparazzo Ramey told Howe war stories of the August weekend in 1969 he spent locked in a rat-infested boathouse to get exclusive photos of Richard Burton and Liz Taylor on their yacht. Steven Ginsburg, a Santa Monica bartender-turned-paparazzo, talked about the terrifying 120-mph car chase led by Affleck through Georgia, jumping curbs and cutting through parking lots.

Mustafa Khalili, a London-born Palestinian who dreams of being a war photographer, described being attacked by Kid Rock and nearly pushed into oncoming traffic when he tried to shoot the performer and Pamela Anderson after a concert. And after Marlon Brando knocked five of his teeth out, Galella would shoot the actor only while wearing a football helmet.

"We're not in this job to make friends with them," Ginsburg told Howe.

The profession is colored by swagger, but the ethics of the paparazzi vary according to the photographer. Some refuse to shoot the children of celebrities. Others shoot what they know will sell, no matter what. Many paparazzi prefer to capture the stars when they're unaware of the camera, but few shy away from confrontation.

Still, there can be misgivings: Even paparazzi have feelings.

"At the end of the day, we're all normal, and the sad thing about these superstars now is that it's so hard for them to be," longtime London-based photographer Duncan Raban told Howe. "Does the paparazzi stuff make them into bigger stars? I guess it does, but I really do genuinely feel sorry for them."

Most paparazzi work in Los Angeles. The stars live here and the city's car culture and warm weather create more colorful images of lightly clad celebrities out and about. Paparazzi eat and breathe their work, scoping sidewalks, windshields and cafes for famous faces. They live in their cars, sometimes staking out celebrity homes for days or weeks at a time, hoping to catch that "morning after" shot of the couple of the moment.

And while this business has always been competitive, the circle of paparazzi working in Los Angeles has increased in 10 years from a handful of photographers to scores of them. There are dozens of paparazzo agencies in Los Angeles, vying for images of about 50 A-listers, which makes it much more difficult to land the high-value exclusive photos.

In fact, Griffin believes the photographers are so hungry for them that the environment is primed for another paparazzo-involved tragedy like the Paris car accident that killed Princess Diana in 1997. Last week, Los Angeles police arrested 24-year-old Fame Pictures Inc. contractor Galo Cesar Ramirez on suspicion of felony assault with a deadly weapon for allegedly intentionally crashing his car into Lohan's Mercedes during a rush-hour chase in Los Angeles.

In April, Jennifer Lopez narrowly avoided a car crash when, she says, a paparazzo cut off her driver. Later that month, as Reese Witherspoon left her gym, she was swarmed by paparazzi, who, police say, nearly forced her off the road as they followed her home and blocked access to her front gate when she arrived.

"The demand has created a lot of cowboys and caused less-reputable people to come out to this town," said Griffin, a Brit who's been L.A.-based for 15 years. "Now I'm having to send my photographers out of town."

Consequently, the paparazzi "are spotting each other as easily as they spot the celebrities," Grossman said. If one photographer takes off from a location suddenly, he's sure to have a competitor close at his heels. For that reason, the real pros -- the independents -- avoid the usual celebrity haunts because so many other paparazzi stake out the place. Instead, they rely on their sources to tip them off to the whereabouts of stars, from out-of-town hotels to airport terminals to parks and even hospitals.

"I carry lots of cash with me just to pay sources who have good information," Griffin said.

Tabloids and magazines often pay paparazzo agencies an hourly rate to shoot a specific assignment, such as a celebrity wedding or a star's visit to the Kabbalah Centre. But photographers also generate their own stories and then later negotiate prices with publications and TV shows all over the world. Us Weekly director of photography Brittain Stone told Howe that the magazine receives 45,000 to 50,000 images each week, three-quarters of which are paparazzo shots.

Legions of amateurs, wielding digital and cell phone cameras, routinely pitch their photos to the media themselves. While publication of these photos is still relatively rare, this burgeoning group adds to the already swelling ranks of professionals. Howe's book details the case of one unnamed amateur who happened to get married the same night in the same Las Vegas chapel as Britney Spears and Jason Alexander, her first husband of just 55 hours. He got photos of the newlyweds and sold them for about $300,000. More and more, the paparazzi are reshaping the traditional model of celebrity publicity by forcing the stars to play their game. Celebrities often try to ward off the swarm by making themselves available at the right time, thereby diminishing the value of unguarded shots.

Many paparazzi believe Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin staged the photo of Martin rubbing her abdomen as the two left her doctor's office, an implicit sign of Paltrow's pregnancy. And after they had the baby, Paltrow took a very public stroll with her infant for the cameras as a way to quell interest in their photos. Soon after her breakup with Billy Bob Thornton, Jolie appeared at a public park with her toddler son, burnishing her role as a caring mother.

Ultimately, publicists can't control the paparazzi. As a result, they try mainly to prevent a client's overexposure, which may mean a hermetic lifestyle, strategic travel plans and disguises. Some A-list stars use "stick cars" that tail them and teams of security guards to keep paparazzi at bay. When those don't work, they hire portrait photographers to shoot "paparazzi-like" photos of a star or alert paparazzi to their client's whereabouts when it can help boost a career. Griffin said he's convinced shots of Pitt and Jolie in Kenya were the result of a publicist's call.

"There's no way you could have a photographer on a beach in Mombasa just waiting for Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt to walk by," he said. "I've been trying to get that shot, or something like it, for 18 months."
